It was a tough weekend for the men’s and women’s basketball teams this past weekend in games against University of Central Missouri. In the men’s game, the Mules scored a three-pointer at the final buzzer to win the game 59-56. Griffons are now 11-15 and 5-10 in the MIAA. They need wins in the last two games to qualify for postseason play.
Griffon women’s basketball (12-12, 7-8 MIAA) went toe-to-toe with defending national champion Central Missouri (18-5, 11-4 MIAA), but lost 74-68 to the Jennies on Senior Day.
One bright spot of the day was the dedication of Tom Smith Court in the Looney Complex. Congratulations, Coach Smith!
The games over the weekend concluded the home basketball schedule, but four road games remain in the regular season with postseason bids and seeding on the line. Both Griffon teams play on Feb. 21 and 23. They will be at Southwest Baptist on Thursday and at University of Central Missouri on Saturday.
Griffon softball dropped two games in Arkansas this past weekend at Henderson State in Arkedelphia. The Griffons lost 8-2 to Henderson State and 4-3 to Arkansas at Monticello. Their record now stands at 6-4.
The baseball team was scheduled to play at home over the past weekend, but all four games were cancelled due to the weather.
And, weather is already altering this week’s spring sports schedules, once again. This weekend’s scheduled home baseball series against Fort Hays State is unlikely and the Emporia State Softball Classic has already been canceled. The MIAA Championship Tournaments for basketball begin on March 6. The tournament format has changed this year with 10 teams qualifying for both men’s and women’s and all 20 going straight to Kansas City. Qualifiers will be announced when the regular season ends.
Griffon Tennis is scheduled to host Quincy at Genesis Health Club Saturday, Feb. 23 and the Griffon Track & Field teams will be in Maryville for the MIAA Championships this weekend.
