Dr. Joseph “Joe” Friedman ’39

Dr. Joseph Friedman will sign copies of his memoir, “Yossel the Dreamer,” from 5:45 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11 in the Alumni Room of the Fulkerson Center on the campus of Missouri Western State University. The book signing will take place during the reception prior to the annual Alumni Awards Banquet as part of Homecoming 2013. Books will be for sale for $20, with proceeds benefiting Missouri Western scholarships.

Dr. Friedman is a 1939 graduate of St. Joseph Junior College, which later became Missouri Western State University. He has been a supporter of Missouri Western for many years, and will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree at the Winter Commencement ceremony Dec. 14.

Dr. Friedman was born in St. Joseph in 1920. His autobiography spans a life lived fully, from a Depression-era childhood to the gut-wrenching horrors of the Holocaust, becoming a successful doctor, and abandoning it all to follow his dream to Broadway. It was edited by Debra L. Butterfield and Sheldon Friedman.

The Alumni Room is an appropriate venue for the book signing. The room was made possible by a gift from Dr. Friedman in honor of his late wife, Gladys Friedman, and cousin, Joseph Droher. It houses a collection of memorabilia from Dr. Friedman’s career, including an Emmy Award he won as a researcher.
