March 21, 2024–The Center for Service at Missouri Western State University will host an applied learning service event at Mount Mora Cemetery from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, March 22.
Students, faculty, staff and alumni can engage in hands-on activities while learning about the cultural and historical significance of preserving our local cemeteries.
Mount Mora Cemetery is located at 824 Mt. Mora Road in St. Joseph. Established in 1851, Mount Mora is St. Joseph’s oldest operating cemetery.
Suzanne Lehr, founder of Mount Mora Preservation and Restoration Association, will detail the history of Mount Mora and some of its occupants.
Dr. Karen Koy, associate professor of biology at Missouri Western, will educate participants on headstone deterioration due to stone selection, time, elements and biological growth.
Missouri Western alum and cemetery preservationist Kurt Jordan will teach techniques for cleaning and restoring grave markers and the value of volunteers.
