The Student Chapter of The Wildlife Society has been extremely busy with their Gold Fridays.
On Friday, Oct. 22 The chapter was assigned to Andrew County to perform wildlife track surveys for the MO Dept of Conservation. Five transects each of which had 10 scent stations and were then read on Sat. Oct. 23.
On Friday, Nov. 5, MWSU students along with members of the TWS, Missouri Master Naturalists, biology faculty, and the Missouri Department of Conservation gathered on the MWSU prairie and planted 175 milkweed plants, which are important pollinator plants to various species like monarch butterflies and other important prairie insect species.
Then on Friday, Nov. 19, TWS, Dr. Cary Chevalier, a MO Dept. of Conservation Naturalist, and MWSU Alumni, hosted an outdoor adventure and educational program for underprivileged kids at Mark Youngdahl Conservation Area in St. Joseph MO called Trunk & Treat in which vehicles trunks were and staffed by owners who were dressed in costumes. Each provided a bucket of treats for the visiting kids.
Further, along the walking trail stations were set up for various activities such as scent identification, tactile boxes, spider decoration wrapping, and more!
Approximately 200 kids and their families took advantage of this safe, fun event.
