The Fire Protection Manager provides services to assist the Missouri Western community in becoming a premier example of fire and life safety programs. Although the Fire Protection Manager is technically under the Office of Facilities, Planning, and Construction; the services round out the university provisions of Environment, Health, and Safety that serve the Missouri Western community. The goal of these programs is to help provide an environment that is safe for all employees, students and visitors and assist in the preservation of state property. Fire and Life Safety affects all elements of the Missouri Western community. It is a shared responsibility that involves at least the awareness of the entire community.

Do you know where the nearest exits are? Do you know where the nearest fire extinguisher is located? Do you know what the fire alarm sounds like? Do you know what to do in the case of an emergency? These are just some of the questions you need to know the answer to in order to stay safe. Fire and Life Safety is everyone’s responsibility so please keep the following in mind:

  • Candles, incense burners, oil lamps, and other items with open flames or that smolder, are prohibited.
  • Keep combustible material storage to a minimum and ensure it is stored correctly.
  • Ensure decorations are hung in a safe manner and do not interfere with any fire and life safety devices or exits.
  • Extension cords are to be used strictly for temporary use (< 8 hours) and power strips are not to be “daisy chained” – use permanent wiring.
  • Ensure electrical panels are not blocked.
  • Know the location of fire extinguishers and ensure they are not blocked.
  • Know the location of exits and ensure corridors and exit doors are not blocked.

The Department of Safety and Risk Management conducts fire safety inspections of campus facilities, assists in the development and implementation of emergency evacuation planning, and assists with testing of all fire detection/suppression systems to ensure compliance with nationally recognized codes and standards.

We are committed to provide consulting guidance and other services through expert knowledge of building, fire protection, and life safety codes and standards. Through these services, we provide the Missouri Western community information and guidance regarding the latest trends and best practices. Services provided include:
