Welcome, First-Generation Students!

First-Generation Student FAQs

It’s ok to be nervous to ask questions. College is a new experience for you, and we want to help you make the most of it. Here are some questions frequently asked by students. If you still have a question after looking at the FAQs, please reach out directly and we will help you.

Simply put, applied learning is hands-on learning. We understand that you can learn so much more by participating in activities outside of the classroom. We are committed to providing 100% of our students with an applied learning (or hands-on) experience before they graduate. These opportunities can include field trips, internships, leadership, mentored research, service-learning, student teaching, practica, performances and more. You can learn more about our mission of applied learning on the Griffon Office of Applied Learning (GOAL) webpage.

Yes – you can visit our Campus Cupboard in Blum Union up to twice per month, no questions asked with a valid student ID. Each visit, you can receive two bags of groceries that can add up to 20 lbs. total.

At Missouri Western, we strive to provide you with an accessible and inclusive collegiate environment. If you have a documented disability with which you need assistance, reach out to the Accessibility Resource Center. They will help you receive the assistance and resources you need to succeed during your time at Missouri Western.

If you have questions about your bill or payment plan, you can reach out to the Business Office. They will help you with any concerns you might have.

If you have any questions about your financial aid awards, contact Financial Aid. They will assist you with any financial aid issues you may have.

You will want to sign up for Griffon Alert to be notified of any emergency that impacts all or part of the campus. The Griffon Alert System includes text messaging, email, voice messaging, alert beacons and outdoor light strobes.

If you are having issues with your accounts and/or technology, submit a ticket through the Help Desk and Technology Services will help you figure out the issues as soon as possible.

If your professor told you that they have specific office hours throughout the semester, those are hours each week in which you can schedule an appointment with them. This is time that they will be found in their office and available to talk with you. Don’t be afraid to make use of your professors’ office hours. They are set up for your benefit. If you do not have availability during their office hours, send them an email asking for a different appointment time. Just because your professor is available during their office hours does not mean they can’t be available other times, too.

If you get sick, visit the Esry Student Health Center, located on the second floor of Blum Union. They offer outpatient and telemedicine services to all registered Missouri Western Students.

Many college students change their major, sometimes multiple times, before graduation. If you know what major you want to choose, sit down with an Academic Advisor to discuss the best course of action to keep you on the path toward graduation. If you are unsure what you want to major in, stop by the Career Development Center, where they can help you find a potential career that matches your skills, abilities and passions.

Homesickness is a very common feeling, especially during your first semester on campus. We highly recommend getting involved on campus. Join Max Engage to learn all about campus events and student organizations you can become involved with. We understand it can be hard to be away from family and friends, but the more you become involved, and the more time you spend on campus and in the community, the more you’ll feel like Missouri Western is your home away from home.

If you feel like you need to talk to a professional about your feelings, our Counseling Center offers free in-person and telehealth appointments to Missouri Western students.

If you are struggling in one or more of your classes, there is no shame in seeking out additional help. The Center for Academic Support offers unlimited in-person and online tutoring sessions for math, writing, and content-specific assistance. Additionally, some classes provide Supplemental Instruction (SI) and workshops sponsored by the Center. The earlier in the semester you reach out for tutoring assistance, the easier it will be for you to get back on the path to success.

At Missouri Western, you have access to Advisors and Counselors. Advisors are the individuals who will help you plan your course schedules and make sure you are on the right track to graduation. Counselors, on the other hand, are individuals prepared to help you through any mental-health challenges you may face during your time at Missouri Western.
