As the spring semester begins, your student will settle into life on campus. They may have been focused on acclimating to university life and their academics during their first semester, but now want the opportunity to branch out and get involved on campus. Fraternity and sorority spring recruitment is an excellent chance for your student to become involved in an organization that will focus on academic excellence, community service, leadership and personal development. On campus, fraternities and sororities are active participants in educational programming and community service, while also promoting a bond of sisterhood and brotherhood that gives each student a home away from home.

There are some negative misconceptions about fraternity and sorority life that are important to address as well. Fraternity and sorority life is often portrayed as a party atmosphere were students haze new members and never focus on academics or their classes because they are too busy drinking. In reality, hazing is not tolerated in any form, on both a campus and national level, and all fraternity and sorority organizations have mandatory GPA requirements to join. Members of each organization work hard to maintain their academic standing in order to be eligible for their organization. The national fraternity and sorority GPA is higher than the overall college GPA. Fraternities and sororities have study groups and academic initiatives to ensure all of their members are successful.

At Missouri Western, there are ten fraternities and sororities. Many of them will conduct informal spring recruitment as students come back for the new semester, so encourage your student to look into the possibility of joining an organization that encompasses campus involvement as well as academic excellence and community service.
